Ethiopia launched a Pulse of Africa, a new pan-African media platform

On October 7, 2025, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially launched Pulse of Africa (POA), a new pan-African media platform based in Addis Ababa. The initiative aims to reshape Africa's global image by promoting African narratives and countering negative stereotypes often found in international media.

Tesfahun Gobezay, State Minister, Government Communications Service, Ethiopia:
“The POA platform is designed to ensure that African priorities, perspectives, and opportunities are fairly and accurately represented on global media.”

Experts and policymakers at the launching event emphasized the media's unique role in fostering African unity and promoting the continent's distinct cultural, historical, socio-economic, and political perspectives globally.

The platform fulfills a proposal made by the Prime Minister at the 35th African Union Summit in 2022, marking a significant step toward allowing Africa to tell its own stories

“The launch of POA platform aligns with BRICS+ goals, positioning African voices as equal partners in global dialogue,” – Dr. Samson Mekonnen, the Director General of the Ethiopian Media Authority, said.

BRICS+ Universities Association believes that POA will contribute a lot to BRICS+ media sphere representing authentic African voices and we appreciate Ethiopia for taking the lead in this initiative. We are convinced that this initiative addresses a critical current need. Its potential impact on the higher education sector is significant. There is a pressing demand for a dedicated media platform that consolidates news, achievements, and opportunities from universities across all African nations. Such a platform would greatly streamline inter-university dialogue and collaboration, thereby actively fostering academic partnership between African countries and the world.
