India's Higher Education: 12 Years of Transformation and Global Rise

India’s higher education sector has undergone a remarkable overhaul over the past 12 years, shifting from a focus on access to one centered on quality, employability, and innovation. This growth has not only expanded the ecosystem but also significantly enhanced its global standing.

𝗨𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Since 2014 the total number of Indian universities has surged from around 760 to over 1,330, adding more than 570 universities nationwide. This expansion has improved regional equity, with new premier institutions established across the country.

𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀
Student enrollment has grown significantly, with the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) increasing from about 23.7% to over 28%. There has been a noticeable shift from degree-oriented education to employability-oriented learning, with institutions now emphasizing internships, live projects, and skill certifications.

Research and innovation have become central pillars, with universities now evaluated on publications, patents, and startup creation. India’s global academic standing has improved, with institutions increasingly visible in global rankings.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗡𝗘𝗣 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬
Recent reforms have enabled foreign universities to establish campuses in India, while Indian institutions are opening overseas campuses. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to transform the system, with an ambitious goal to increase the GER to 50% by 2035.
